Roxanich Super Istrian Cuvee, 2008

With the Super Istrian, attention to detail is key here! And one would say a perfect harmony of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Borgonja (Gamay) is the result! The nose provides a showcase for all three grapes equally, even though the percentages do not support the claim. Soft, plush, fluffy, smooth, silky, structured, and very drinkable – but not the least bit generic! It is remarkable how much only 20% of Borgonja does! It provides such much life and excitement to the Merlot’s and Cabernet Sauvignon’s mountainous structure, depth, and presence on the nose and palate. It is very hard not to like this wine and what Mladen Rožanić tries to convey with it – that Croatia does not just produce wine, but that it represents a very important and vital wine culture that should not, by all means, be overlooked!

Roxanich Teran, 2008

Very intense but balanced and youthfully elegant aromas of spices, peppers, zest, gaminess and smokiness, while accompanied by chocolate covered strawberry and raspberry fruit. A hint of terroir on the nose which tells you that the wine is a well-made natural wine, with depth and seriousness, but it does not show even the slightest bit of dirtiness, which many natural wines do. On the palate the wine is extremely precise and very light on its feet – especially given the fact that the alcohol levels are over 14%! Much like the nose, the palate is very refined, with beef jerky, leather, chocolate, juicy inky acidity, and fine grainy tannins. A remarkable wine, to say the least!

Zlatan Crljenak, 2010

SUSTAINABLE FARMING This is the original and authentic Zinfandel grape! Proven by UC Davis professor Carole Meredith, this grape has ended any speculation about weather or not Croatia is the home of the Zinfandel grape. This vibrant, extracted wine offers bright fruit, fresh cherries and plums on the nose. Great structure and personality! Full body, robust, yet youthful with inviting drinkability. Enjoy it with pasta with meat sauces, roasted and grilled red meats or aged parmeggiano.

Zlatan Plavac Hvar, 2010

A premium red wine from Zlatan Plenković, one of Croatia’s best winemakers, that does not carry such an extra-ordinary premium price. The wine is dark ruby in color, with a rich and layered, pleasant, and deep aroma that has undertones of Dalmatian herbs, spices, minerality, saltiness, dark fruit, and a touch of barnyard and “funk.” The wine is warm and comforting on the nose, which is typical of Zlatan’s wines and has given them a specific identity and cult-following in Croatia and Europe. It is immensely structured and balanced, and possesses a refined, complex, and an exceptional presence on the palate that is followed by a long and persistent finish. Zlatan Plavac has long been linked as the traditional drinks of fishermen, peasants and farmers, as well as the exceptional wine connoisseur, with the very best “details” that a Croatian table has to offer during a special occasion.

Zlatan Plavac Sibenic, 2011

One of Croatia’s best examples of Dalmatian coastal southern red wine, it is a little less bitter than your average classic Plavac at this price point, with it being completely dry with low residual unfermented sugar. The color is purple-burgundy with blue reflections, and the delightful aroma is unaccented, restrained, and discreet so it ends up being pleasant to all connoisseurs of good red wine. Its freshness and medium-body aroma gives the Zlatan Plavac Šibenik distinct aromas of the Plavac Mali varietal, most of which are darker cherry and raspberry fruits, currants, herbs, laced with the structure of the easily recognizable fine tannins and earthiness that are ever-so-present in Plavac Mali wines.

Zlatan Plavac, Plavac Mali GC, 2010

PRACTICING ORGANIC The self-proclaimed Grand Cru is produced from the premium juice of more than fifty-year-old Plavac Mali vines, and aged for 18 months in new barriques. It is one of the highest quality examples of Plavac Mali available in Croatia, and produced in limited quantities. This big, inky wine offers heady black fruit on the nose, along with a mild sweet oak. Strong tannins and a full body support incredibly concentrated black cherry, plum, and blueberry fruit on the palate, along with earth and tobacco. The oak is well integrated, for an excellent overall balance. This wine will develop tremendously with age.

Zlatan Posip, 2012

PRACTICING ORGANIC From the pristine Croatian coast, comes this Pošip, an ancient indigenous Croatian varietal that is extremely popular in its home country. With one of the oldest wine histories in the world, this unique Croatian Pošip has a straw-golden color, with denseness that leaves a thick trail in the glass. Aged in stainless steel, it is loaded with bright, full, and distinctive flavors, with aromas of dried apricots and figs. A bit leaner, fresher, and more expressive than what is normally found in Pošip from Čara, Korčula Island, it is a delightful gastronomical experience when paired with Mediterranean-styled seafood, dried or smoked ham, aged cheeses, and grilled pork chops.
